Halogen Light Bulbs
Halogen Lamps - The Ideal Halogen Lighting Fixtures
Halogen lamps are also known as quartz halogen and tungsten halogen lamps. It is an advanced form of incandescent lamp. The filament is composed of ductile tungsten and is located in a gas-filled bulb just like a standard tungsten bulb, however, the gas in a halogen bulb is at a higher pressure (7-8 ATM).
The glass bulb is made of fused quartz, high-silica glass or aluminosilicate. It's stronger than standard glass to contain high pressure. This lamp has been an industry standard for work lights and film/television lighting due to its compact size and high-lumen output. The halogen lamp is being replaced slowly by the white LED array lamp, miniature HID and fluorescent lamps.
Pros & Cons of Halogen Light Bulbs
Like every other bulb, halogen light bulbs have shortcomings too, but their advantages can often outweigh them. Here's a list of both so you can decide whether you'd like to get yourself a halogen bulb installed.
Pros:
- Halogen light bulbs are small and lightweight, costing low to produce
- Does not use mercury like CFLs(fluorescent) or mercury vapor lights
- Better color temperature than standard tungsten (2800-3400 Kelvin), it is closer to sunlight than the more "orangy" standard tungsten.
- Longer life than a conventional incandescent
- Instant on to full brightness, no warm-up time, and is dimmable
Disadvantages:
- Extremely hot (easily capable of causing severe burns if the lamp is touched). It is sensitive to oils left by the human skin. If touched with bare hands, the oil left behind will heat up once the bulb is activated and may result in a rupture of the bulb.
- The bulb is capable of blowing and sending hot glass shards outward. A screen or layer of glass on the outside can protect users.
- Not as efficient as HID lamps (Metal Halide and HPS lamps)
Does a Halogen Light Bulb Relate To a Xenon Bulb?
A halogen light bulb lamp is an incandescent lamp that contains a small amount of bromine or iodine. A halogen light bulb lamp is also known as a quartz iodine lamp or tungsten halogen lamp. Xenon lamps are very similar, except that xenon gas is used instead of halogen. Both serve to extend the light bulb's lifespan. The advantages of both include greater energy efficiency than traditional incandescent bulbs and affordability, but there are also key differences.
Xenon and Halogen Bulb - How They Compare
A single halogen bulb is rated at 2,000 hours, which is twice as long as an incandescent bulb. These bulbs produce approximately 10-35 lumens per watt compared to just 8-24 for an incandescent. Xenon bulbs are rated for 10,000 hours, for 5 times the lifespan of a halogen bulb. Compared to incandescent bulbs, they both boast excellent color rendering and superior lumen maintenance in a compact size. There have been recent advances in halogen bulb technology, such as the development of infrared. MR16 IR bulbs feature reflectors with dichroic coating to dissipate heat and provide greater efficiency and lower energy usage.
What are Halogen Light Bulbs Used For?
At Lightingandsupplies.com, we offer one of the largest selections of xenon and halogen bulbs in many different styles, such as halogen track light bulbs. You'll find a halogen light bulb used in everything from studio lighting to residential kitchen lights. We have styles for specific uses that include stage lighting, projector lamps, outdoor lighting, home and garden lights, medical lighting and many others. These are popular in stage productions and photographic studios because of the many possibilities of color temperatures.
Popular halogen replacement bulbs include MR16 bulbs, used for directional lighting and PAR can bulbs, which are used in recessed lights. However, halogen lamps can be used in many applications, with commercial and residential being the most common.
In commercial applications, halogen bulbs are well suited where space is limited, great for retail lighting with their low UV levels being ideal for museums. Halogen MR16 bulbs are commonly found in track lighting or small recessed cans. Larger PAR bulbs are found in landscape lighting, security lights and high ceilings. In residential applications, they are well suited for detailed work areas because of their high light output, they are ideal for kitchens and offices and can be found throughout homes in track, recessed and outdoor lighting.
