It is extremely rare for the camshaft to be the source of camshaft failure. Each camshaft is subjected to stringent quality inspections throughout the manufacturing process to check that it satisfies all design parameters. Insufficient lubrication, improper break-in, reusing old/worn components, mechanical interferences, and substandard hardware/hardware that isn't twisted to spec are common causes of failure. Volvo Penta's retainer fits behind the front cover and serves as a seal for the front oil passageways, which supply oil to the lifters, cam, and main bearings. They have a specially designed gray O-ring seal to keep oil sealed in. The plates can withstand higher cam loads.
