The piston ring is a component that is required for an engine to function correctly. It is in between the piston and the cylinder. Piston rings serve four primary purposes:
Maintain the complete airtightness between the piston and the cylinder wall. It works hard to block combustion gas from seeping into the space created between the piston and cylinder during an explosion.
- It constantly creates the bare minimum of the lubricating oil layer to prevent a burn. The piston ring inside an engine's cylinder is exposed to high-temperature combustion gas and, together with the piston, must travel and return thousands, if not millions, of times each minute.
- It is responsible for transferring heat from the piston to the cylinder.
- The temperature inside the piston reaches around 300 degrees Celsius when the gas erupts.
- It keeps the piston from contacting the cylinder wall too hard.
