Oil seals protect shafts and bearings from dirt and foreign matter entry and oil or grease outflow. An oil seal consists of a circular metal component on the outside and a flexible member on the inside that does the actual sealing and is chemically attached to the metal section. Rubber is used to make the sealing part, which might be synthetic or natural depending on the situation. Cutting away the flash that forms at the sealing edge during molding prepares the flexible member's sealing lip. A fine sealing edge applies adequate pressure to the shaft to prevent leaking. One of the most common causes of oil seal failure is the entry of dust and debris. Even the slightest particles can cause a seal to crack in high-pressure situations, allowing oil to seep and dirt to enter.
