A locknut (also known as a self-locking nut or a locking nut) is a nut that is resistant to loosening due to vibration and use. Because of this, it is required hardware for a wide range of applications. Unlike free-spinning nuts, locknuts use a deforming elastic or metal material to keep them in place when torque and stress are applied. Locknuts are known locking nuts, prevailing torque nuts, stiff nuts, locknuts, and elastic stop nuts. Many lock nuts have a nylon insert for the highest thread, which generates the friction needed to lock the component against the size. Although lock nuts with elastic inserts are repurposed, the torque generated diminishes over time.

Key Features:

  • Shock, vibration, and other forces should not release their locking action, attained by the distortion of their uppermost threads.

  • It will only be used so many times because the prevailing torque lowers with each use of the nut
