The knock sensor is an acoustic monitor fitted into the block casting that "listens" for undesirable sounds within a specific frequency range. If it detects a rattling, it slows down the time until the noise stops. It is far more sensitive than a human ear and reacts in milliseconds. It does not, however, notify the operator of the condition. The ECM has detected an electrical issue in the sensor or its wiring if you have a knock sensor fault alarm. They're located beneath the exhaust manifolds, in the middle of the cylinder block, and are a hassle to get to, but not impossible.
