The impeller is held in position on the pump shaft by impeller keys. It fits into a crucial depression on the pump shaft. It allows the impeller to revolve and pump fluids properly. The keys are always flat on the bottom. Thus, the tops might be square or rounded depending on the impeller. When replacing the impeller, always replace the impeller key to ensure optimum cooling system operation.
