A winch is a mechanical device that adjusts the tension of a rope or wire rope by pulling in (winding up) or letting out (winding out). In increasingly complex designs, gear assemblies are employed and are driven by electric, hydraulic, pneumatic, or internal combustion motors. It might feature a solenoid brake, a mechanical brake, or a ratchet and pawl mechanism that prevents it from unwinding unless the pawl is withdrawn. The rope may be hung from the winch. When trimming a line on a sailboat, the crew member twists the winch handle with one hand while tailing (drawing on the loose tail end) with the other. The Trailer Winch Cable is made of galvanized cable and comes with a Utility Snap (155822). It is made of galvanized cable with an electro-galvanized forged steel hook and has a breaking strength of 5,000 pounds.
