A temperature gauge works by transmitting a low-amperage current from the gauge's meter to the ground via a variable-resistance sending unit. The resistance of the sending units rises or subside with the variations in pressure, temperature, etc. As the sender's resistance varies, the amount of current permitted to flow through it to ground changes, and the meter deflects, indicating the temperature.
