The Block Cover Gasket is designed for use in Mercury marine applications. It has the job of keeping the lube oil from leaking out from the cover and sealing the internals of the engine outside contaminants. It also seals the crankcase so that your PCV valve works properly. The damaged cover gasket will get leak oil and a potential fire hazard from hot engine oil contact with hot exhaust components, possible ingress points for water, and other contaminants. The infrequent oil changes are a common cause of premature valve cover gasket failure.
