Most propeller shafts use keys to transmit torque from it to the propeller. The brass key is a long, thin rectangle of metal that runs the length of the shafting and slides into a keyway or slot that has been well-milled (carved away) into the hub's interior. Torque is transferred from the shaft to the prop using keys and friction. When there is continual tension to a key stock, it gradually wears out. It will rotate in the essential direction as it ages and may finally shear.

Key Features:

  • A shaft key may allow for torque transmission by preventing relative rotation between the two components.
  • The shaft and rotating components (gear, pulley, and coupler) must both have a keyway and a key seat in order for a shaft key to work effectively.
